Understanding Absolute Zero
The fundamental difference between the Celsius scale and the Kelvin scale lies in their starting points. While Celsius places zero at the freezing point of water, Kelvin places zero at the absolute lowest theoretical temperature possible: Absolute Zero.
At Absolute Zero (0 K or -273.15 °C), atomic and molecular motion effectively stops. Because there can be no temperature lower than this condition, the Kelvin scale does not use negative numbers. Additionally, Kelvin is an absolute thermodynamic temperature scale and does not use the degree symbol (°). It is just "Kelvin (K)", not "degrees Kelvin".
One unit increment of Kelvin is exactly equal in magnitude to one degree Celsius. This means an increase of 1 K is the exact same amount of thermal energy increase as an increase of 1 °C.
